JLPT N2 Grammar

あげく

N2Cause / Reason

N2 · Cause / Reason · ta-form verb + あげく / noun + の + あげく

Meaning

after all; in the end, often after trouble

Structure

ta-form verb + あげく / noun + の + あげく

Explanation

あげく describes a final result after a long process, struggle, or discussion, often with a negative outcome.

Usage

The preceding part is usually a tiring or troublesome process; the following part gives the final result.

Example

長い議論のあげく、結論は来週まで持ち越された。

After a long discussion, the conclusion was postponed until next week.

Common Mistake

Do not use it for an easy positive result; it often sounds like “after all that trouble...”

Memory Tip

The more troublesome the process, the more あげく fits.
