JLPT N1 Grammar

あっての

N1Cause / Reason

N1 · Cause / Reason · noun + あっての + noun

Meaning

possible only because of; owing everything to

Structure

noun + あっての + noun

Explanation

あっての shows that the second noun exists, succeeds, or has value only because of the first noun.

Usage

It is common when expressing gratitude, emphasizing a foundation, or explaining dependency.

Example

お客様あっての商売ですから、一人ひとりの声を大切にしています。

Our business exists because of our customers, so we value each customer’s voice.

Common Mistake

Do not attach it to a full ordinary clause; the basic pattern is AあってのB.

Memory Tip

A is the foundation and B is the result; without A, B would not stand.
