人/动物が + いる

いる is used for the existence of people and animals, and also appears in continuing-state patterns.

The location often takes に, and the person or animal takes が.

教室に学生がいます。

There are students in the classroom.

Use ある for inanimate things such as books and desks.

Memorize “いる” as one fixed chunk, then practice by replacing words in the example sentence. Learn the connection first, then the nuance.
