かえって means the result is contrary to expectation, sometimes the opposite.

It is common when good intentions or measures have the opposite effect.

細かく説明しすぎると、かえって分かりにくくなる。

If you explain too much detail, it can actually become harder to understand.

Do not use it like ordinary でも; it emphasizes an opposite effect.
