Structure

plain form + かと思いきや

Explanation

かと思いきや means one expected the preceding result, but something unexpected or opposite happened.

Usage

It is often used in written narration or dramatic turns.

Example

今年は順調に進むかと思いきや、最後に大きな問題が起きた。

I thought things would go smoothly this year, but a major problem occurred at the end.

Common Mistake

Do not treat it as identical to かと思ったら; it is more written and more dramatic.
