Explanation

があります states the existence of inanimate things, events, or abstract matters.

Usage

The existing thing takes が, and the location often takes に.

Example

机の上に新しい辞書があります。

There is a new dictionary on the desk.

Common Mistake

People and animals usually use います.

Memory Tip

For inanimate existence, use あります first.
