Structure

adjective stem + がる

Explanation

がる describes a third person's feeling or desire as observed from the outside.

Usage

It often attaches to adjective stems, as in 寒がる and うれしがる.

Example

子どもが暗い部屋を怖がっています。

The child is afraid of the dark room.

Common Mistake

For your own feelings, usually do not use がる; say 怖い or ほしい directly.

Memory Tip

がる is emotion seen from the outside.
