JLPT N5 Grammar

が(转折)

N5Contrast / Concession

N5 · Contrast / Concession · 句子 + が + 句子

Meaning

but; although

Structure

句子 + が + 句子

Explanation

This が connects two clauses and marks a contrast or unexpected turn. It sounds softer than でも.

Usage

Softer and somewhat more written than でも; useful for polite lead-ins.

Example

雨が降っていますが、出かけます。

It is raining, but I will go out.

Common Mistake

Do not confuse it with the subject particle が; contrastive が connects two clauses.

Memory Tip

が between two clauses often works like a soft 'but.'
