ことになる/ことにする

N4Other

N4 · Other · verb辞书形 + ことになる / ことにする

Meaning

it has been decided; decide to

Structure

verb辞书形 + ことになる / ことにする

Explanation

ことになる often means it has been decided by circumstances or others; ことにする means the speaker decides.

Usage

Distinguish the source of the decision: external arrangement uses ことになる; personal decision uses ことにする.

Example

来月から大阪で働くことになりました。

It has been decided that I will work in Osaka from next month.

Common Mistake

Do not mix them as になることにする; these are two different patterns.

なる leans external result; する leans personal decision.
