JLPT N3 Grammar

ことはない

N3Obligation

N3 · Obligation · verb辞书形 + ことはない

Meaning

there is no need to; do not have to

Structure

verb辞书形 + ことはない

Explanation

Shows that an action is unnecessary, often used to reassure, advise, or say there is no need to worry.

Usage

Often used in speech or explanatory tone; do not add another negative after it.

Example

少し遅れただけだから、そんなに謝ることはありません。

You were only a little late, so there is no need to apologize so much.

Common Mistake

Do not confuse it with ことがない, which talks about experience or frequency; ことはない means there is no need.
