JLPT N2 Grammar

ことを

N2Relation

N2 · Relation · plain form + ことを + verb

Meaning

the fact that; the act of doing as an object

Structure

plain form + ことを + verb

Explanation

Nominalizes the preceding clause with こと and marks it with を as the object of a following verb such as inform, forget, remember, or wish.

Usage

It needs a following transitive verb; stopping at ことを leaves the sentence incomplete.

Example

試験に合格したことを家族に知らせた。

I told my family that I had passed the exam.

Common Mistake

Do not mistake ことを for a sentence-ending grammar point; it is usually a nominalized object phrase.

Memory Tip

こと packages the clause, and を hands it to the following verb.
