Shows that if the first action is not done or the first condition does not hold, the following undesirable result will occur.

Common in written or somewhat formal explanations; the following clause is often a warning.

今週中に設定を確認してください。さもないと、本番環境でエラーが出る恐れがあります。

Please check the settings by the end of this week. Otherwise, errors may occur in production.

Do not parse it as さも plus ない; as a whole it means 'otherwise.'

The first clause is the condition for avoiding a bad result.
