Structure

nai-form verb去ない + ざるを得ない(する → せざるを得ない)

Explanation

Shows that due to external circumstances or practical limits, one must do the first action even if unwilling.

Usage

Written and formal in tone, somewhat stronger than しかない.

Example

急に担当者が休んだため、私が代わりに説明せざるを得なかった。

Because the person in charge suddenly took leave, I had no choice but to explain in their place.

Common Mistake

する becomes せざるを得ない; do not write しざる.

Memory Tip

You do not want to do it, but reality pushes you there.
