only + しか

Explanation

しか is used with a negative verb to mean 'only; nothing more than.'

Usage

It must be followed by a negative form, as in 千円しかありません.

Example

財布には千円しか入っていません。

There is only one thousand yen in my wallet.

Common Mistake

Do not say しかあります; しか requires a negative predicate.

Memory Tip

Memorize しか〜ない as one block meaning 'only.'
