masu-stem verb + すぎる

Explanation

すぎる attaches to verb or adjective stems and means the degree goes beyond what is appropriate.

Usage

Drop い from i-adjectives before すぎる; attach it directly to na-adjectives.

Example

このスープは熱すぎて、すぐには飲めません。

This soup is too hot to drink right away.

Common Mistake

Do not say 熱いすぎる; drop the final い.

Memory Tip

すぎる means 'go too far.'
