cannot help doing; cannot resist

Structure

nai-form verb去掉ない + ずにはいられない

Explanation

Shows that an emotion or situation is so strong that one cannot refrain from doing something. It has a somewhat written tone.

Usage

する becomes せずにはいられない, not しず.

Example

あの映画を見ると、泣かずにはいられません。

Whenever I watch that movie, I cannot help crying.

Common Mistake

Do not drop に; the fixed pattern is ずにはいられない.

Memory Tip

ず is an old-style negative, but the whole phrase means the action is unavoidable.
