Explanation

Shows that something one expected to need to do, or worried would happen, did not happen and things were fine.

Usage

Often used for avoiding trouble, costs, punishment, loss, and similar burdens.

Example

早めに予約しておいたので、長い列に並ばずに済んだ。

Because I made a reservation early, I avoided having to stand in a long line.

Common Mistake

する becomes せずに済む; it is not merely not doing something, but being spared from it.

Memory Tip

The trouble you might have had to go through was spared in the end.
