JLPT N3 Grammar

せいぜい

N3限度

N3 · 限度 · せいぜい + 数量 / 句子

Meaning

at most; at best; as much as possible

Structure

せいぜい + 数量 / 句子

Explanation

Shows that the upper limit of an amount, degree, or ability is not high; it can also mean doing one's best.

Usage

When marking an upper limit, it often sounds like 'only that much'; for effort, せいぜい頑張る is common.

Example

この会議に参加できる人は、せいぜい十人くらいだと思う。

I think at most about ten people can attend this meeting.

Common Mistake

Do not confuse it with ぜひ; せいぜい often marks a limited upper bound.

Memory Tip

The ceiling is low; at most it reaches that point.
