JLPT N4 Grammar

そうだ(样态)

N4Inference / Appearance

N4 · Inference / Appearance · masu-stem verb/adjective stem + そうだ

Meaning

looks like; seems about to

Structure

masu-stem verb/adjective stem + そうだ

Explanation

Appearance そうだ judges from what is visible: 'looks like it will...' or 'looks...'

Usage

Use verb stems; drop い from i-adjectives; いい becomes よさそう.

Example

空が暗くなって、雨が降りそうです。

The sky has gotten dark, and it looks like it will rain.

Common Mistake

Do not confuse it with hearsay そうだ; appearance uses stems, hearsay uses plain forms.

Memory Tip

Appearance そう comes from visible signs.
