そうだ(样态)

N5Inference / Appearance

N5 · Inference / Appearance · masu-stem verb/adjective stem + そうだ

Meaning

looks like; seems about to

Structure

masu-stem verb/adjective stem + そうだ

Explanation

The appearance use of そうだ makes a judgment from what something looks like: 'looks...'

Usage

Drop い from i-adjectives before そう. いい becomes よさそう.

Example

このケーキはおいしそうです。

This cake looks delicious.

Common Mistake

Appearance そうだ is not hearsay. Hearsay follows a plain form, as in 雨が降るそうです.

Memory Tip

Appearance そう comes from what you can see.
