JLPT N1 Grammar

そばから

N1即時

N1 · 即時 · verb辞书形 / た形 + そばから

Meaning

as soon as; right after

Structure

verb辞书形 / た形 + そばから

Explanation

Shows that as soon as the first action occurs, the second immediately happens, often canceling the effect of the first.

Usage

Often used for frustrating repeated situations: remembering then forgetting, tidying then becoming messy, saying then changing.

Example

新しい単語を覚えたそばから忘れてしまい、なかなか定着しない。

As soon as I memorize new words, I forget them, so they do not stick easily.

Common Mistake

Do not use it for ordinary one-time sequence; it often implies frustration that the effect is immediately undone.

Memory Tip

It has just been set up, and immediately falls apart again.
