JLPT N5 Grammar

たい

N5Intention / Invitation

N5 · Intention / Invitation · masu-stem verb + たい

Meaning

want to

Structure

masu-stem verb + たい

Explanation

たい attaches to the verb stem and expresses what the speaker wants to do.

Usage

たい conjugates like an i-adjective, as in 行きたくない.

Example

週末に京都へ行きたいです。

I want to go to Kyoto on the weekend.

Common Mistake

For third-person desires, use たがる or provide evidence; do not directly assert inner feelings too freely.

Memory Tip

Remove ます from 行きます and add たい.
