Structure

ta-form verb + つもりはない

Explanation

Shows that the speaker denies having intended the first action, often for explanation or defense.

Usage

Often used when explaining one's intent after being taken as offensive, critical, secretive, and so on.

Example

あなたを責めたつもりはありません。ただ事実を確認したかっただけです。

I did not mean to blame you. I only wanted to confirm the facts.

Common Mistake

Do not use it as a simple past negative; it denies intention.

Memory Tip

It may sound that way, but that was not the intention.
