JLPT N3 Grammar

たとえ~ても

N3Condition

N3 · Condition · たとえ + plain form + ても / でも

Meaning

even if; no matter if

Structure

たとえ + plain form + ても / でも

Explanation

Shows that even if the first condition is true, the result in the second clause will not change.

Usage

The following clause often expresses determination, judgment, or an unchanged result.

Example

たとえ時間がかかっても、この研究を最後まで続けたい。

Even if it takes time, I want to continue this research to the end.

Common Mistake

Do not omit ても or でも; たとえ alone does not complete the pattern.

Memory Tip

Imagine the difficult condition first, then say the result stays the same.
