JLPT N1 Grammar

たところで

N1让步

N1 · 让步 · ta-form verb + ところで

Meaning

even if; even supposing

Structure

ta-form verb + ところで

Explanation

Shows that even if the first action happens, the expected result will not be obtained; the following clause is often negative or pessimistic.

Usage

Often explains that doing something is useless or has limited effect.

Example

今から急いだところで、最終電車には間に合わないだろう。

Even if we hurry now, we probably will not make the last train.

Common Mistake

Do not confuse it with temporal ところで; here it is a concessive condition.

Memory Tip

Even if the first part happens, the second will not improve.
