JLPT N3 Grammar

たとたん

N3

N3 · 時 · ta-form verb + とたん(に)

Meaning

the moment; as soon as

Structure

ta-form verb + とたん(に)

Explanation

Shows that immediately after the first action ends, the second event happens, often suddenly, unexpectedly, or uncontrollably.

Usage

The following clause usually should not be a deliberate planned action by the speaker.

Example

窓を開けたとたん、冷たい風が部屋に入ってきた。

The moment I opened the window, cold wind came into the room.

Common Mistake

Do not use it for planned actions, such as 'I will study as soon as I get home'; that sounds unnatural.

Memory Tip

The second event pops out the instant the first one lands.
