JLPT N1 Grammar

たら最後 / たが最後

N1Condition

N1 · Condition · ta-form verb + ら最後 / が最後

Meaning

once...then all is lost; once

Structure

ta-form verb + ら最後 / が最後

Explanation

Shows that once the first event happens, an irreversible or hard-to-change negative result follows.

Usage

Strong in tone; the following clause is usually negative, out of control, or unrecoverable.

Example

その設定を本番で間違えたら最後、全ユーザーに影響が出る。

Once that setting is wrong in production, all users will be affected.

Common Mistake

Do not use it for small problems easily fixed; it emphasizes serious consequences.

Memory Tip

The first clause is like a floodgate; once opened, it is hard to close.
