たら

N4Condition

N4 · Condition · ta-form verb + ら

Meaning

...; the result is a corresponding result

Structure

ta-form verb + ら

Explanation

たら forms a condition from the past form plus ら, and can also mean after the first action is completed.

Usage

It can be followed by requests, suggestions, and volitional expressions, so it is very flexible.

Example

時間があったら、映画を見に行きましょう。

If we have time, let's go watch a movie.

Common Mistake

Although たら uses a past form, it does not necessarily refer to the past in conditionals.

Memory Tip

た-form + ら: if/when that situation comes.
