Explanation

だけましだ means the situation is not good, but at least it is better than a worse alternative.

Usage

It often carries consolation, resignation, or a realistic judgment.

Example

給料は高くないが、残業が少ないだけましだ。

The salary is not high, but at least there is little overtime, so it is better than it could be.

Common Mistake

Do not use it for a very satisfying situation; it means “not good, but at least better.”

Memory Tip

Finding a small good point in a bad situation: だけまし.
