N1 · Limitation · noun + だに / verb辞書形 + だに

Structure

noun + だに / verb辞書形 + だに

Explanation

だに emphasizes degree through an extreme example, often in set phrases such as 想像だにしない.

Usage

It is mostly written or fixed in set expressions and has limited use in modern speech.

Example

その事故の規模は、当時は想像だにしなかった。

At the time, we did not even imagine the scale of that accident.
