JLPT N4 Grammar

だろう

N4Other

N4 · Other · plain form + だろう

Meaning

probably; I suppose

Structure

plain form + だろう

Explanation

だろう is a plain-style conjecture: the speaker thinks something will probably happen or is probably true.

Usage

It appears in plain style, written explanations, or monologue; polite conversation often uses でしょう.

Example

明日はもっと寒くなるだろう。

It will probably get colder tomorrow.

Common Mistake

だろう is not direct confirmation with the listener; でしょう? with intonation is often used for that.

Memory Tip

だろう is the plain-style 'probably.'
