Meaning

to be; polite or plain assertion

Structure

noun/na-adjective + だ・です

Explanation

だ is the plain copula and です is the polite copula. Use them to state identity, qualities, or conditions.

Usage

Use だ/です after nouns and na-adjectives. Do not add だ after a present affirmative i-adjective.

Example

これは私のノートです。

This is my notebook.

Common Mistake

Do not say おいしいだ. The polite i-adjective form is おいしいです.

Memory Tip

Learn noun + です first as the basic 'this is...' sentence pattern.
