ちなみに adds information related to the previous topic but not central to it.

It is common in both formal and casual explanation for adding side information.

この店は月曜が定休日です。ちなみに、祝日の場合は翌日が休みです。

This shop is closed on Mondays. By the way, if Monday is a holiday, it closes the next day.

Do not use it to jump to a completely unrelated topic.

Add related side information beside the main topic.
