Shows doing an additional action while doing a main action.

The first action is the main purpose; the following action is done incidentally.

郵便局へ行くついでに、近くのスーパーで牛乳を買ってきた。

While going to the post office, I stopped by the nearby supermarket and bought milk.

Do not reverse the main purpose and the incidental action; the clause after ついでに is usually secondary.

Go out for the main errand and handle a small extra task along the way.
