JLPT N2 Grammar

つつ

N2同時

N2 · 同時 · masu-form verb去ます + つつ

Meaning

while; although

Structure

masu-form verb去ます + つつ

Explanation

Can show two actions occurring simultaneously, or that one does the opposite despite knowing the first fact.

Usage

It has a written feel; the contrastive use often carries self-reproach or reflection.

Example

体に悪いと知りつつ、忙しい日は夜遅くまで働いてしまう。

Although I know it is bad for my health, on busy days I end up working late into the night.

Common Mistake

For simultaneous actions the subject is usually the same; in contrastive use, keep the nuance of 'despite knowing.'

Memory Tip

The mind knows one thing, while the action goes another way.
