JLPT N3 Grammar

つもりだった

N3Intention / Invitation

N3 · Intention / Invitation · verb辞书形 + つもりだった / nai-form verb + つもりだった

Meaning

intended to; had planned to

Structure

verb辞书形 + つもりだった / nai-form verb + つもりだった

Explanation

つもりだった describes an intention or plan one had in the past, often implying that circumstances later changed.

Usage

It often appears with が or けれど to contrast the original plan with what actually happened.

Example

早く帰るつもりでしたが、会議が長引いてしまいました。

I had planned to go home early, but the meeting ran long.

Common Mistake

Do not treat it as a simple past action; it describes a past intention, not necessarily a completed action.

Memory Tip

つもりだった is the plan that was in your mind at that time.
