Structure

verb辞书形 + つもりではない / noun + のつもりではない

Explanation

Clarifies the speaker's intention, explaining that an action or statement was not meant in the way the listener may have understood it.

Usage

Often used to explain oneself, soften the tone, or prevent misunderstanding, especially in apologies or position statements.

Example

あなたを責めるつもりではないので、まず事情を聞きたい。

I do not mean to blame you, so I would like to hear what happened first.

Common Mistake

予定ではない says there is no plan on the schedule; つもりではない says the speaker does not intend it.
