てあげる

N4Other

N4 · Other · te-form verb + あげる

Meaning

do something for someone else

Structure

te-form verb + あげる

Explanation

てあげる means the speaker's side does something for someone else, benefiting that person.

Usage

Using it directly for superiors can sound patronizing, so consider the relationship.

Example

弟に自転車の乗り方を教えてあげました。

I taught my younger brother how to ride a bicycle.

Common Mistake

When someone does something for me, use てくれる, not てあげる.

Memory Tip
