humbly receive someone doing something for us

Structure

te-form verb + いただく

Explanation

ていただく is the humble polite form of てもらう, used when receiving an action from a superior, customer, or respected person.

Usage

For requests, ていただけますか and the more polite ていただけないでしょうか are common.

Example

先生に推薦状を書いていただきました。

I had my teacher write a recommendation letter for me.

Common Mistake

Do not use ていただく for something you do for others; the humble direction is the opposite.
