ていた

N4Other

N4 · Other · te-form verb + いた

Meaning

was doing or was in a state

Structure

te-form verb + いた

Explanation

ていた can show an action in progress at a past time, or a state that continued in the past.

Usage

Use time expressions and context to decide whether it is past progressive or past state.

Example

子どものころ、この町に住んでいました。

I lived in this town when I was a child.

Common Mistake

Do not translate every ていた as 'was doing'; it can also mean 'used to be in a state.'

Memory Tip

Move ている into the past and it becomes ていた.
