Meaning

ongoing action, continuing state, or resulting state

Structure

te-form verb + いる

Explanation

ている can show an action in progress or a state that remains after an action.

Usage

結婚している and 知っている describe states; 走っている describes an ongoing action.

Example

妹は今、部屋で宿題をしています。

My younger sister is doing homework in her room now.

Common Mistake

Do not translate every ている as 'is doing'; sometimes it means 'is in a state of...'

Memory Tip

First decide whether the action is ongoing or the result remains.
