te-form verb + おく

ておく means doing something in advance for later convenience, or leaving something in a certain state for now.

In speech, ておく often contracts to とく, as in 予約しとく.

旅行の前に、ホテルを予約しておきます。

I will book the hotel before the trip.

Do not read ておく as just a past action; the point is preparation for later.

おく has a 'leave it ready' feeling.
