Explanation
くださる is the respectful form of くれる, used when a superior, teacher, customer, or respected person does something for the speaker's side.
Usage
The polite past form てくださいました is very common. The imperative-like ください is also used separately for requests.
Example
先生が推薦状を書いてくださった。
My teacher kindly wrote a recommendation letter for me.
Common Mistake
Do not confuse it with ていただく. With くださる, the giver is the subject; with いただく, the speaker's side is the subject.
Memory Tip
くださる frames the favor as coming down from the respected giver to the speaker's side.
