Structure

te-form verb + はいけない

Explanation

てはいけない means an action is forbidden or not allowed.

Usage

In speech it often becomes ちゃいけない. A polite warning uses てはいけません.

Example

図書館で大きな声で話してはいけません。

You must not speak loudly in the library.

Common Mistake

Do not confuse it with なくてもいい. This means prohibition; that means not necessary.
