Shows that only after experiencing the first action does one realize, understand, or experience the second thing.

The following clause often contains results such as 分かる, 気づく, 知る, or できる.

一人で暮らしてはじめて、家事の大変さが分かった。

Only after living alone did I understand how hard housework is.

It is not simple sequence; the focus is 'only after that experience.'

The second thing opens for the first time after the first experience.
