てはだめ directly says that doing something is not allowed and sounds conversational.

In speech, it often contracts to ちゃだめ or じゃだめ.

ここでたばこを吸ってはだめです。

You must not smoke here.

Formal rule statements more often use てはいけません.

だめ means 'not okay.'
