te-form verb + はならない

Explanation

Expresses prohibition based on rules, ethics, or a strong judgment.

Usage

Formal in tone and common in rules, notices, explanations, and serious warnings.

Example

試験中は、辞書やスマートフォンを使用してはならない。

During the exam, dictionaries and smartphones must not be used.

Common Mistake

In casual situations, してはいけない is more natural; てはならない is more formal and stronger.
