Meaning

if; when, with an undesirable result

Structure

te-form verb + は / noun・na-adjective + では

Explanation

Shows that if the first situation occurs, an undesirable result or judgment follows.

Usage

The following clause is often negative, difficult, cautionary, or evaluative; in speech it often becomes ちゃ / じゃ.

Example

こんなに漢字を間違えては、採点者に意味が伝わらない。

If the kanji are wrong like this, the grader will not understand the meaning.

Common Mistake

Do not confuse it with ordinary て sequencing; this pattern stresses an undesirable consequence.
