JLPT N3 Grammar

て済む

N3Result

N3 · Result · te-form verb + 済む

Meaning

be settled by; be enough to

Structure

te-form verb + 済む

Explanation

Shows that doing the first action or reaching that degree is enough to settle the matter, without needing more serious or additional measures.

Usage

Common with costs, apologies, repairs, and ways of handling problems.

Example

小さな傷だったので、薬を塗るだけで済んだ。

It was only a small wound, so applying medicine was enough.

Common Mistake

Do not treat it as identical to 終わる; 済む emphasizes that the matter has been settled.

Memory Tip

At this point, the matter is settled.
