です・ます style is polite speech used to make sentences appropriate in everyday interactions.

Usage

Keep style consistent in a passage; avoid randomly switching between plain and polite forms.

Example

私は毎日、日本語を勉強します。

I study Japanese every day.

Common Mistake

Use ます for verb sentences and です for noun/adjective sentences; do not add です mechanically everywhere.

Memory Tip

The two pillars of polite style are です and ます.
